Characteristics of the Genus (from Kramp 1961)

Catostylidae with a broad, intracircular anastomosing network in direct communication with the ring canal and the rhopalar canals only (not with the inter-rhopalar canals); mouth-arms each with a terminal whip-like appendage, usually with whip-like filaments (except in A. hardenbergi).
